Your decision to install a metal roof should not impact your decision to install solar electricity. There are no suitable mounting products available, or the methods we are discussing here are far too expensive relative to the cost of a solar pool heater. We do not recommend solar pool heating systems on stone coated metal roofs at this time. It is important to note that we are talking about solar electricity systems here. We were impressed with the product and its adaptability with the Tile Hook from Quickmount PV. The roof we just finished working on was Tilcor, a product made in New Zealand. Gerard, Decra, and Tilcor are popular stone coated metal tile roof manufacturers in Florida. Selecting the right method based on the roof manufacturer and model is imperative. Enlisting a roofer that will be cooperative with the solar contractor is necessary. Hiring a contractor with experience on this roof type is critical. We selected the tile hook method using a Quickmount PV tile hook. There is a lot of re-roofing happening now in the community and homeowners are increasingly choosing metal tiles, which were approved by the HOA. We recently did a solar photovoltaic panel installation on a stone coated metal roof in Colonial Country Club in Fort Myers.

In the case of tile hooks, we advise going beyond code with the number of attachments to reduce flex of the brackets in high wind conditions. These were originally developed for concrete tile roofs, but adapt well to metal tile.

This requires using two sheets of metal tile and a solar flashing sandwiched between the two tiles. The first method we support is the “flashing sandwich,” which name I will credit to Quickmount PV who provides roof mounts and flashings. There are ways to retrofit these roofs for solar, but they are not ideal and they are costly. Coordinating installation with the roofer is the only way to assure you don’t have to walk on the finished roof – at least minimizing the likelihood. Walking on metal tile is a sure way to crush or dent tiles, and it’s nearly impossible to maneuver while carrying solar panels and mounting equipment. The only good way to accomplish it is during the initial roof installation in our opinion. The second seal is the butyl polymer beneath the feet of the bracket, and the third is formed as the fastener is driven into the substrate, pulling butyl polymer into the threads of the fastener.Installing solar panels on these roofs presents challenges. The first seal is formed by the washer on the fastener from the top side.

This butyl polymer along with the EPDM seal on the fasteners forms what we call a “triple seal”. This creates a “double-seal” by way of the EPDM washer on the fasteners from above and the pre-applied EPDM on the feet of the bracket from below.Ī watertight, factory-applied, 60-year butyl polymer seal is used on our brackets that attach to the decking or structure in the drainage plane of the roof. Instead, you get permanence, convenience, maintenance freedom, ease of installation, a complete assembly, and peace of mind.ĮPDM factory-seal is used on sheeting-only attached brackets that mount on roof ribs or corrugations out of the drainage plane. No risky, field applied sealants are ever used. S-5! brackets feature integrated sealant reservoirs to prevent over-compression of the seal and to protect the sealant from UV degradation. If you want to use the rail manufacturer’s L-Foot instead, see S-5! SolarFoot. The circular holes in the vertical part of the bracket support up to 1” (25 mm) conduit. Bolts and nuts are offered separately with common bolt sizes. The diagonal slot design of the bracket makes 1.75” (45 mm) of height adjustability a snap. Used with side-bolted rail systems, VersaGard can be installed either parallel or perpendicular to slope for portrait or landscape module orientation. No unreliable, field-applied caulking is needed.

The bracket is specifically designed with a factory-applied, butyl sealant offering a long-term service life, free from UV degradation, drying and cracking.

VersaGard functions as an L-Foot and mounting base in one component for PV rail mounting. For snow applications, see VersaGard™ snow guard system. VersaGard is a metal roof bracket used for both PV installation and snow retention on exposed-fastened metal roofs.
